Humanism is the framework that I chose to use for shaming on the internet. Humanist first was used by a German philosopher Friedrich Immanuel Niethammer. The humanist termw as used to describe the Greek societal approach to ethical situations. Human reasoning and humans in control of their own fate is a core aspect of Humanism. Man is in control of his own fate is another way that Humanism is described, it is quite contrary to other ethical frameworks. Humanism also is about taking responsibility for the things you say or do. This means that if you say something that is contrary to the collective good then you have to take responsiblity for the results of what you said. Taking responsiblity can be applied to meaning that shaming must be accepted and what you said or did should contemplated and adjusted. Adjusted could be a change in stance or seeking forgiveness. But this is not always a negative thing. One could also interpret this to mean that you can change the collective to accept your action or words as a collective norm.
The humanist approach to handling each other in a society goes well with the individual in the collective. In order for people to work together in a way that does not make us divided shame is a tool that can be used to require others to stop doing things contrary to societal norms. This collective stance changes though and can depend on the people that make up that society. The collective can also be a subset within the main societal structure but that does not stop the majority from shaming the subset.
Socialism is another framework that applies very well to shaming on the internet. The actions of getting everyone into a single thought for the attempt of social cohesion fits with socialism. This social unity through shaming of the minority to move in line with the society as a whole is a method of unifying people in oppose to constantly dividing them. Without the ability to socially come together we would just hate each other and not be able to come together for solutions to problems. We will be seperated into groups to find a way away from shame.
Utilitarian is another framework that I chose to use. This framework is about making people useful rather than attractive. The act of shaming someone else is ugly. It makes people feel bad. but in order for society to function fully and operate in a functionally useful way then we must all be somewhat on the same page. Without the power of shame we will all be seperated into groups and not be able to communicate with people outside that group. Never feeling shame is an attractive idea, but it does more harm to not have shame than to have it. Making society less useful through the removal of shame means that shame has a purpose in everyday life. When you go into a store and steal something, (depending on your ethics) you will feel shame for what you did. This shame and other types of shaming help to bring society closer together and with less conflicts. The opposite of which is division and lack of harmony making us less useful to each other. Shame makes us useful to each other.
